Healthcare Coding Application

Prior to this new web application, users did their work in a variety of locations: paper forms, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases, and another web application. They spent extra time going to all these places and while there spent extra time because each was cumbersome to use. Efficiently doing their job was challenging for users.

Users of this system are health care billing coders, managers, and executives from both the client and their health care business customers.

I was the Lead UX Designer on the project working part of the project on my own and part of it with a second UX designer to whom I gave direction and oversight. During the project I conducted initial user research, created UX documentation, led design sessions with the project team and business leaders, and partnered with a user researcher to conduct usability testing.

This project used the Agile Methodology.

The following is a selection from one part of the application.

Coding Main Page

Billing coders are required not only to be highly accurate, but also to be highly efficient. My design

  • brought many previously disparate pieces of functionality together on one page
  • minimized the need for frequent scrolling by organizing page elements to follow typical workflow
  • included tab order and keyboard shortcuts
  • automatically opened each supporting chart PDF in a separate window which stayed locked to the user's set position for the session (all use a dual-monitor set up)
  • allowed user to navigate the chart PDF from the coding page via mouse or keyboard shortcut to minimize the need to mouse to the second monitor to change PDF pages

HCC Tracker

Clicking the "HCC Tracker" link from the Coding Main Page (above) allows the user to see additional helpful information.

Additional Coding Details (Informed Coding)

The three small tables under each year's eligibility (on main page, top) provided enough detail in most cases, but the user can click the "More" link to view additional details.
